New Black Basalt

New Black Basalt is a dense black volcanic stone from China, also traded as China Black or Mongolia Black. It has a fine, even grain and a high density of around 3,200 kg/m³, which makes it heavier and harder than most basalts on the market.

Many basalts fade to grey when flamed. New Black Basalt keeps an even, deep black, and that is the main reason buyers choose it for exterior work:

• Flamed paving slabs for plazas, streets and terraces
• Kerbs and road curbstones
• Setts and cobbles
• Wall cladding and copings
• Steps and window sills

Finishes: flamed, flamed and brushed, honed, polished, bush-hammered and sandblasted. Polished pieces show a deep black close to granite, but flamed remains the most common finish outdoors.

Its strength suits areas with vehicle traffic and freeze-thaw cycles. As a general guide, 30 mm paving is used for pedestrian areas and 50 mm or more where vehicles pass, depending on the bedding.
